What is InSAR Radar Monitoring for Oil and Gas?
InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) is an exciting remote sensing technique used to monitor the stability of critical infrastructure including pipelines, buildings, transportation and production facilities. By providing a comparison of known faults with vertical displacement, InSAR is able to provide cumulative vertical displacement over a producing field. With this data it is possible to know which faults are controlling movement with sub-centimeter precision.
Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) can provide high-quality, remotely sensed data about surface deformation. InSAR is best used as an overlay to high resolution imagery and provides sub-centimeter accuracy for critical reservoir monitoring and oil recovery techniques.
InSAR Benefits
- Millimeter precision in detecting displacements
- Synoptic overviews of producing reservoirs
- Scalable: from 1 to 1000s of square km
- Synergy with conventional techniques (e.g. GPS)
- No on site operations required
- Can look at movement over time
- Regular updates, independent of weather and seasons
- Cost-effective solution when compared to monitoring teams
InSAR delivers access to sub-centimeter resolution as a standalone solution or with greater knowledge imparted as an overlay on high resolution satellite imagery. Imagery has been proven to reduce costs and improve accuracy for defining ocean topography, map and monitor sea ice and measure of land heights and movement. InSAR monitoring technologies are relatively low in cost and their information content adds significant value, if properly interpreted and integrated with more conventional data.
InSAR allows you to choose your areas of interest and help find the best data for your application at the lowest cost. You can compare multiple views of the same area taken at different dates, utilizing the data for the complete lifecycle of your oilfield. Satellite imagery allows you to view and respond to accidents and weather events soon after they happen.

RadarWatch Offshore Seep/Spill and Platform Monitoring
- view brochure (pdf)
Spatial Energy and 3v Geomatics have teamed together to create a radar-based "offshore oil spill and platform monitoring" solution to monitor key offshore areas of the globe for oil companies. Oil companies now have access to a regular monitoring program so they can minimize costs and maximize reaction time to oil seeps, spills, and emergency responses from reservoirs and pipelines with accurate information.
Offshore Seep/Spill Monitoring for Oil and Gas
Radar satellites are active sensors that produce unique signatures when interacting with both water and oil. This unique signature can be used to identify the presence of natural oil seeps and oil spills on the ocean surface.
Offshore Platform Monitoring for Oil and Gas
Data from active radar satellite sensors can be processed to identify and monitor displacements with sub-centimeter accuracy over large areas. Advanced InSAR processing techniques can be applied for a comprehensive monitoring solution of offshore platforms.
